Andean: Carved Alabaster Stone
Peru is home to a white alabaster stone known as PIEDRA DE HUAMANGA found only in quarries nearby the city of Huamanga, also known as Ayacucho, Peru. Huamanga is one of the major handicraft centers of the Andes, beautiful ceramics .
Colors range from luminescent white to a subtle shade of pink, the beauty and texture of the huamanga stone is provided by its calcium carbonate crystals. Alabaster stone carvers carry on a centuries old tradition, dating back to Inca times, when artesanos were respected members of Inca Society.
Today the carving of the alabaster stone is a tradition used by the huamanguinos craftsmen who with their wonderful hands transform it into beautiful unique pieces of art in different representations as religious images, rural births, subjects, animals, among others.
